ROMANTIC SINTRA
From the construction of the Moorish Castle in the 8th century, until the construction of the Royal Pena Palace in the 19th century, Sintra acquired a cosmopolitan and Royal flair, to which it has been
associated ever since.
Due to the richness of the land and the amenity of the weather, Sintra became the favorite leisure
area for Portuguese kings. Already qualified as a Natural Park and a Protected Area, in December
1995 Sintra became an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A visit to the Palácio da Vila (Sintra National Palace) is included in the tour. Unique in architectural
design, the palace is topped by two large twin chimneys which have become the symbol of Sintra.
Building of the palace started in medieval times, after which it suffered several changes and the
main building that can be seen today is from the 15th century. Queen Filipa of Lancaster, an English
lady, wanted to have a house in the middle of the green and the palace, as we see it today, was finished.
It has one of the oldest, most beautiful and important collection of coloured glazed tiles. After
the visit to the palace there will be time to stroll around the small streets and hidden squares where
many handicraft shops can be found.
The bus will leave from the Lisbon Congress Centre at 09H30 for a 4 hour duration tour in Sintra.
- PRICE PER PERSON € 35

BEATO CONVENT – PRESIDENT’S RECEPTION
The Convent’s construction started back in the 15th century in the place where there was, at the time,
a little church for the invocation of Saint Benedict.
In middle 16th century Canon António da Conceição was appointed to plan with grandeur the construction
of a new convent in a date that cannot be determined accurately but quite probably prior
to 1580.
The church could receive one thousand believers and led to an imposing harmonious cloister, and a“ship full” shaped ceiling library, which would hold about one thousand books, not to mention the
chapter room, the stairway and the refectory where nowadays one can still see some fine white and
blue tiles. Convento do Beato was mainly built with white marble with red jasper spots, alternating
with white and pink marbles, which contribute to a sober but yet magnificent look. The convent has
had several maintenance works, the last being
after a big fire that occurred in 2004 in which the
Convent suffered some damage that was quickly
recovered.
This is the location that has been chosen to welcome
you to the 84th Congress of the EOS. A dinner
and a pleasant entertainment together with a surprising
location will contribute to a very special
evening.

CONGRESS OUTING SILVER MILL COMPETITION
Sintra – The ancient summer residence of Kings, Nobility and poets, a green luxurious area only at
40 minutes from Lisbon, where you almost forget you are living in the XXI century due to all the
palaces, Manor Houses and estates of romantic and antique style. This is the area we propose for
the Congress Outing where you will have the chance of mixing culture with fun, enjoy a country
lunch and try to win a competition. The day will start with a tour around this area, taking you to the
most western point of Europe “where land finishes and sea begins”, as well as a visit to the village.
Afterwards we will go to the lunch spot, the very unique and stunning “Quinta da Regaleira”, where
you can wander around and discover the mystical and secret passages of the Freemason Order.
Set in four acres of land with luscious green shrubs, trees, and well-tended flower gardens, the
Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra was opened to the public in the summer of 1998. At the foot of the
road just before the Seteais Palace Hotel, and looking like something straight out of a fairy tale, the
present palace, with all its intricate carvings in wood and stone, was built by António Augusto
Carvalho Monteiro. Monteiro was born in 1848, the son of a wealthy Portuguese family who lived
in Brazil and whose fortunes were made from the monopoly of the coffee trade and precious stones.
In Portugal he was known as 'Monteiro dos Milhões' – Monteiro of the Millions and was believed to
belong to the Secret Society of Masons.
A portuguese wine tasting and lunch will be served in open air in the middle of this quite enchanted
property and thus you will be able to taste a little of the Portuguese summer atmosphere.
Register yourself and take the day to go through a journey in time…
The bus will leave from the Lisbon Congress Centre 09h00.
- PRICE PER PERSON € 90
